How to Frame a Silk Scarf

How to Frame a Silk Scarf: A Fun and Easy Guide

Introduction

Time Estimate: 30 minutes to 1 hour.

Framing a silk scarf is a great way to preserve and display art. Whether it’s a luxurious Hermès scarf or a cherished keepsake, framing allows you to enjoy it daily as part of your decor. Follow this guide for stress-free results!

Tools You’ll Need:

  • Pencil
  • Screwdriver
  • Steamer or iron
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Wall screws (not included in the package)

Step 1: Prep Your Scarf

Ensure your scarf is clean and smooth. If it’s wrinkled, you can use a handheld steamer to remove creases. Hold it about 15 cm (6 inches) away and steam from top to bottom. Remember, silk is delicate, so use a gentle heat and avoid getting too close.

Alternatively, you can iron it on a low heat setting, but be sure to place a cloth between the iron and the scarf to protect the delicate fabric.

Step 2: Disassemble the Frame

Remove the metal brackets from two corners of the bottom frame. Then, slide out the acrylic glass, matboard, and backing board.

Step 3: Attach the Scarf to the Backing

To keep your scarf in perfect condition, use a magnetic strip system. It securely holds the scarf in place while allowing you to remove or replace it for wearing whenever you like. Here’s how:

Measure the Backing: Measure both the backing matboard (or foam core) and your scarf. Scarves like Hermès often have hand-rolled edges, which can result in slight variations in size (e.g., 88.5 x 87 cm or 88.5 x 89 cm). For example, if the backing matboard (or foam core) measures 100 cm and your scarf is 88.5 cm, use this formula to calculate the placement line: (100 cm - 88.5 cm) ÷ 2 + 1.2 cm ≈ 7 cm. Lightly mark a line at approximately 7 cm with a pencil. It is recommended to allow an additional buffer of 0.2-0.3cm for optimal results.

Repeat on All Sides: Repeat this measurement and marking on the other three sides to ensure the scarf will be perfectly centered.

Attach the Magnetic Strips: Cut the magnetic strips to the correct length, peel off the backing, and align them along the pencil lines.

Attach the Scarf: Lay the scarf flat on the matboard or foam core, gently smoothing it and pressing lightly to secure and avoid wrinkles. Then, carefully align the two magnetic strips together.

Step 4: Prepare the Acrylic Glass

Carefully peel the protective film from one side of the acrylic glass and place the clean side down on top of the scarf. After it’s in place, peel off the film from the other side, being careful not to touch the exposed surface to avoid fingerprints.

    Step 5: Reassemble the Frame

Slide the acrylic glass, matboard, scarf, and backing board back into the frame.

    Step 6: Secure the Frame

Screw the metal mounting brackets back onto the frame to lock everything in place.

    Step 7: Tighten the Backing

Add spring clips between the wooden backing board (or foam core) and the frame to ensure everything is snug. Use three clips on each side for larger frames and two clips on each side for smaller frames to keep it secure.

    Step 8: Final Touches

Wipe down the acrylic glass to remove any dust or fingerprints. Your beautifully framed scarf is ready to be displayed! Hang it up and admire your work!

    Final Tips:

    1. Alignment: The magnetic strips must be perfectly aligned, as shown in the left image.
    2. Troubleshooting:The magnetic strips can be cut in half or to any size to fit your scarf framing, if necessary, especially if the strips are not applied correctly or for other reasons.
    3. Safety First: The framing kit contains small parts, so be sure to keep it out of reach of children.
    4. Secure the Screws: Make sure all screws are securely fastened to prevent the frame from loosening or falling.
